I Spy With My Little Eye

January 5, 2009
6:06pm
It may be a long year on this project if all I can come up with five days in is Charlie investigating the bottom of the raisin box. But it's fairly crisp and the dining room mirror is reflecting an entire roomful of homemade glitter snowflakes hanging from the ceiling, which will always make this photograph different from any other Son Searches For Raisins photograph I may take this the year.

Better As a Memory

January 4, 2009
4:04pm
A quarter-inch of ice covered Madison like a big, ol' glazed donut last night. However, the tornado-like energy packed in our two pint-sized little whippersnappers stops for no one, including Mother Nature. We made the treacherous trek to a nearby park and home without any casualties, but I think John & I were worse for wear because of it. I know you're not "supposed" to shoot with the a light source behind your subject. Rules be damned. See how the sidewalk looks wet? That would be ice. I'm kinda liking how the sun offers up a runway of light between the two, and if you look closely toward Charlie's boot, you'll notice that's a reflection and not just a shadow.

Boxing Day

January 3, 2009
5:19pm
I think technically you're supposed to wait until Epiphany to haul all the Christmas crap back to the basement and/or curb, but we get to the point where we Can't.Take.It.One.More.Day and need to purge our living room of all things Christmas. I swear I could feel the house's heavy sigh of relief when John pitched the little fire hazard out on the lawn. We absolutely need the eleven month moratorium on the sight of boxes of jingly, glittery, shiny orbs, stars, and 1977 Big Bird that we so hastily threw together today. Even so, we'll be vacuuming and sweeping and stepping on Fraser fir needles and glitter until July, keeping just a bit of Christmas around.

Quarter-Sized Eyes, If You Could See Them

January 2, 2009
11:41am
We walked over to our awesome little neighborhood ice rink, which is completely maintained by neighborhood dads. The boys were mesmerized by the two guys playing a pick-up hockey game. Seriously, there's a much-loved playground about 20 feet behind them and they didn't even bother to shift their weight on their firmly planted feet. I used the Elph and added fill light because they're standing smack-dab in a tree's shadow. I also added a touch of color saturation in an attempt to offer a little more contrast between the players' and the boys' coats and the whiteness of the scene.

Happy New Year!

12:39am
Jack rings in two thousand nine. This also serves as proof that we made it to midnight--a feat in its own right! I set up the tripod on the nightstand in his room, only using light from the hallway and kept the shutter open for 4 seconds. Click on the picture for an expanded version.
